The Bad Seed Food Truck
Thursday Jun 10, 2021
Thursday Jun 10, 2021
Christina Hartley-Conroy, the mastermind behind The Bad Seed Food Truck, was able to secure the financing needed to purchase the food truck just a couple of weeks ago. Very quickly, she was able to get the truck set up and officially opened on June 3rd. On this episode, Jaye and Martha got a sneak peak into the food truck just days before the Grand Opening, then went to be the first ones in line on opening day! Listen in to hear about this remarkable Grand Marais food option.

Canal Park Part 2 - A Day in Canal Park
Thursday Jun 03, 2021
Thursday Jun 03, 2021
Two episodes ago we brought you part one of the Canal Park series. Well, this is part 2 - a day in Canal Park! In this episode, Martha and Jaye take a stroll down to the Aerial Lift Bridge and discuss the Tugboat Bayfield and its predecessor, The King of Neptune. Then, they do a bit of shopping wrapped up with a little people watching at the Duluth Slip Bridge. Martha also gets to experience the most horrible (and equally most hilarious) thing that happens to visitors frequently in Canal Park - she got pooped on by a seagull. Enjoy!

Once and Future - A Grand Marais Art Installation
Thursday May 27, 2021
Thursday May 27, 2021
Recently, we had a TikTok get... well, a lot more views than we're used to getting. The video, which showed a mysterious white creature in the woods, garnered way more attention than I expected or was prepared for. After seeing the interest in "the thing in the woods" we reached out to the woman who created it to learn more about the animal hiding in the woods around Grand Marais. The mysterious white animal is actually a woodland caribou made out of metal rebar and burlap. He's one of three parts to the new art installation called "Once and Future" by artist Corrie Steckelberg. In this interview, we learn more about the "Once and Forever" art installation and what went into creating these life-sized caribou sculptures.

Canal Park Part 1 - A Little Bit of History
Thursday May 20, 2021
Thursday May 20, 2021
We didn't mean for this episode to be broken into two like this, but we just got so into the history of the Aerial Lift Bridge and the William A Irvin ship that it started getting a bit long! So here is Part 1 of our trip to Canal Park. This episode focuses on a little tiny bit of the history of Canal Park. Mostly, how two of Duluth's most iconic structures came to be and why. Find out what it means to be "Bridged" and why this is Martha's actual neighborhood (at least for two months of her life) in this week's episode.

Chasing Waterfalls | North Shore Waterfall Season
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
Thursday Mar 25, 2021
Waterfall Season is underway along the North Shore and Jaye and Martha weren't going to miss it this year! In this episode, we visit Cascade River State Park, Temperance River State Park, plus the Cross River Falls and Caribou Falls to check on the status of the waterfalls. Waterfall Season is pretty short-lived up here, running from the end of March to mid-April most years. Waterfall Season happens when inland snowmelt finds its way into rivers and streams causing a large influx of water flowing over area waterfalls, which have also recently melted.

The Cramer Tunnel + Harry Potter Meets Grand Marais
Tuesday Oct 27, 2020
Tuesday Oct 27, 2020
It's been a minute since we've released a podcast episode. There's a good reason for that! Tune in to hear why we haven't been able to release a new episode since August (sorry!) and how the podcast will look going forward. Then, Jaye and Martha share a few fall adventures they've gone on. Jaye turned downtown Grand Marais into Diagon Alley for her kids' homeschool class. Then, Jaye and Martha recount their trip to the abandoned Cramer Tunnel. Learn the history and their experience going through the tunnel in this week's episode of Exploring the North Shore.

Stand Up Paddleboarding + An Interview with Hartley Acero
Friday Aug 21, 2020
Friday Aug 21, 2020
Sorry for being gone so long! Jaye and Martha sit down to discuss their busy summer that kept them from creating more podcast episodes (sorry!). Then, they chat about an activity that has been growing in popularity on the North Shore the last few years: Stand Up Paddleboarding. Learn where and how to rent a SUP or take a SUP tour on the North Shore. Plus, a quick buying guide for picking up a SUP of your own.
*
Then, Jaye sits down for an interview with Hartley Acero. Hartley is the outreach coordinator for the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic in Grand Marais. She shares her wisdom and knowledge on how to get outside and enjoy the North Shore this summer and fall while staying COVID-Safe. Listen to the end- it's a great interview with lots of great information! Plus, there's some bonus random Martha-isms to enjoy.

BLM & Our Trip Into the BWCA with Sawbill Canoe Outfitters
Tuesday Jun 23, 2020
Tuesday Jun 23, 2020
You may have noticed that Exploring the North Shore did not have a new episode 2 weeks ago, as scheduled. We decided to observe "Black Out Tuesday" that week and did not release the episode we were working on in observation of the Black Lives Matter movement and everything happening in Minnesota and around the world. We support BLM, we support the protesters, and we support equality for all POC. We give our statement at the start of this episode.
*
Then, Martha and Jaye head into the BWCA! Starting at Sawbill Canoe Outfitters at the end of the Sawbill Trail, owner Dan Shirley guides the ladies through the outfitting process. Then, they head out onto Sawbill Lake on what was meant to be a 3-lake journey into the BWCA. That's not exactly what happened! Listened to find out how the trip really went in this week's episode of Exploring the North Shore.
